Earlier flash drives were available in 2.0. now a days USB 3.0 is available. Do you know what the difference between them is? Let us distinguish Flash drive 2.0 and Flash drive 3.0 based on the following o Backward compatibility o Maximum transfer rate o Bi directional transfer o Charging power o Smart Charging
Flash drives 2.0 were first introduced in 2001. Flash drives 3.0 were introduced in 2009 providing better features.
o Backward Compatibility means whether the Flash drives are compatible with the previous versions. Flash drive 2.0 was compatible with USB 1.1 where as Flash drive 3.0 being a newer version, is compatible with USB 2.0 as well as USB 1.1
o Maximum transfer rate refers to the amount of data that can be transferred in a particular point of time. The maximum transfer rate provided by Flash drive 2.0 was 480 Mbps where as the maximum transfer rate provided by USB 3.0 is 4.8 Gbps. Although Flash drive 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0, if it is connected on that or a slower port, the maximum transfer rate will take place at a slower rate and not reach its maximum capacity of 4.8 Gbps.
o Bi directional transfer refers to simultaneous uploading to the flash drive and downloading from the flash drive. If you can copy the files to the Flash drive and copy the files from the Flash drive on to your compouter at the same times, it is called Bi directional transfer. Bi directional transfer is possible in USB 3.0 but it is not available in USB 3.0. This basically provides a faster data transfer.
o Charging power is the amount of power that is supplied to the port. USB 2.0 supplies 100 milliamps of power whereas USB 3.0 supplies 900 milliamps of power. When the port is not in use, the power is not supplied to it. This is smart charging. USB 2.0 did not have smart charging where as USB 3.0 provides smart charging All the computers that were available post 2009 have 3.0 USB port and for those who use older computers, Flash drives 3.0 are compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well. Carry your data along everywhere with Flash drives 3.0 and ensure that all your deadlines are met.
