Applicants must be members of the American Harp Society, Inc. to apply (please visit www.harpsociety.org/Membership/JoinRenew if needed), and must be both a harpist and a composer. Applicants do not have to be formally studying composition to be eligible.
Pieces should be original works for solo harp (pedal or lever) in any style (no transcriptions or arrangements) up to 8 minutes in length. Any genre (pop, classical, folk, jazz, spiritual, etc.) is welcome, and it may be composed for any style or size of harp (pedal, lever, Celtic, etc). Compositions must be original and the sole creation of the applicant. Entries must not be plagiarized or violate copyright laws. Each applicant may submit only one composition (per Institute) for consideration in the program. Submission by email or online upload of an audio recording and printed score are required with the application. The application fee is $30.
The selected Featured Composers will be categorized by their age as of June 1, 2017:
- Junior Age 12 and Under
- Teen I Age 13-15
- Teen II Age 16-18
- Young Adult Age 19-25
If selected as a Featured Composer, applicants will be asked to attend and perform their own pieces at the AHS Summer Institute, June 25-28, 2017 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Under special circumstances they may ask that another harpist play it instead. They will also enjoy group and individual coaching during the Institute with professional composers Libby Larsen and Rachel Brandwein.
If a Featured Composer is unable to participate in person at the Institute, their piece will not be featured at that Institute, so that another composer who is present may have the opportunity. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by April 10, and must confirm their attendance at the Institute no later than May 1, 2017.
