“You need to take risks in order to accomplish great things.” – Tudor Bastea
What motivated you to start this journey with Florin Cornianu?
Before 123ContactForm, we already worked on other projects together, while we were colleagues at the “Politehnica” University. We had a good relationship, mainly because we share the same values, so it was quite natural to continue together.
How did you get your idea for the business?
Back in the day, there were no good and free tools to build simple web forms. We needed them for our other projects, so we thought to try to build one.
What made you choose this type of business?
I think it was the fact that, being a SaaS, it had the potential to bring recurring revenue.
What is unique about 123ContactForm?
The forms and surveys that you can build with it are extremely varied. You can build the forms exactly how you need them. And if you get stuck, our Support team is always helpful.
What problem are you solving?
We offer our clients the possibility to put the desired form or survey on their website, within minutes. It’s much cheaper than hiring a programmer, and it can be done even in the middle of the night, if that’s the time you need the form.
What is a typical workday like for you?
I get at work around 8.30. First I make a coffee, then I have breakfast (yogurt and a pretzel) while checking my email and the servers’ status. After I finish, I try to work on what I consider would be most useful for the company. During the day, I am approached by various people from the company for technical help. I try to leave the office before 17.30 and to spend as much time possible with my family. But sometimes this is ruined by a call or an automatic SMS that tells me that the servers have issues and I need to fix them.
What is the toughest decision you had to make in the first few years of 123ContactForm?
I think the toughest decision was to accept other people as shareholders of the company. I knew the benefits of bringing them into the company (I am referring to Adrian Gheara and 3TS) but I didn’t know how the interaction will be, if we will get along well. But it looks like I made the right decision.
To what do you attribute your success?
Seriousness, correctness, and passion for what I do.
What is the best and the worst advice you’ve ever received ?
The best: look around you, try to learn how others develop their projects. I don’t remember the worst advice, but I remember how an ex-colleague reacted when I left my job in a local corporation: “So, you’re going to be your own boss?” (followed by an ironic laugh).
If you had one piece of advice for someone starting out, what would it be?
Start various projects. Work on them with passion, but don’t be afraid to shut them down if they don’t fly. Usually success is hard to get, and you don’t achieve it from the first attempt.
